How to save water in daily life

In this article, we are going to see how to save water in daily life. Water is our basic essential; life is not possible without water. In our daily life, we use water for our survival, but most of it we generally waste.

Around 75% of the Earth is covered with water, but only one percent of this is freshwater that is for data use. Even only some percent of it is available; most of it is in glaciers.

Ground water is the major source of water we have. Out of available water, the level of groundwater is decreasing day by day. More land to dig out needs to get water. Even at some places, it has depleted to extinction. This is known as water scarcity. We should understand the importance of water we have and save it.

Reasons behind water scarcity

  • The main reason behind this is covering the Earth with concrete for the purposes of building roads, buildings, etc. Like this, we are stopping the Earth from taking water, even taking out water.
  • Cutting down trees  loosen the soil, and decreasing its capacity of holding water.
  •  Irrigation practices that farmers  adopt, use so much water, even some of it just gets evaporated, depleting the level of groundwater.
  • In daily life, we are used to waste water a lot. Using running taps  and shower wastes a lot of water nowadays, instead of a bucket and mug, is a major factor that wastes water in her daily life.

Why should we save water?

We should save as  water scarcity is being a global issue that needs to be addressed globally. Our growing population, industrialization, are putting constant pressure on available water resources.

We should save water as water is a finite resource, and to ensure that future generations also get accessible to clean and save water.

Droughts, landslides, crop failures are impacts of climate change. To cope with these impacts, we need water resources. Moreover, saving water practices also help to combat climate change.

We should save water because all living beings are directly dependent on water for their survival. There is no life if there is no water.

10 ways to save water in daily life

Avoid using running water

Earlier, people used to use a pump for drawing water out from the ground, but now we can get water from taps easily. Using water like this leads to more waste of water. There is no measure of running water. Even we forget to turn off tap sometime. Using a bucket or mug gives a quantitative measure of water and controls its wastage.

Collect rainwater

Collecting rainwater can save a lot of water that we can use for washing purposes. It can reduce dependence on groundwater. Many different techniques are used at different places for collecting rainwater. You can install a rain barrel on your roof. A system can also be installed to take water from the roof and take it to the ground that recharges the groundwater.

Plant trees

Trees help in increasing the capacity of soil of holding water. This reduces the rate of evaporation and recharges the groundwater.

Mulching

Mulching helps the spil to retain water and reduce water evaporation. It also helps in reducing the growth of weeds. Shredded leaves, straw, grass clippings would treat  as mulch for your garden.

Smart irrigation

Avoid watering your plants in hotter days instead go for watering in colder days or watering in the early morning or  late in evening. Drip irrigation or soaked hoses can use for irrigation to prevent runoff of water. Also, adjust the schedule of irrigation to avoid overwatering.

Reuse water

Reuse used water for any un potable purposes such as washing car, flushing and watering plants. It minimises the wastage of water.

Check leaks

Check leaks in your pipe even a small leakage can add up to substantial water loss.

Install water alarm

Install water alarms for saving water wastage in daily usage. We are always unaware of the capacity of tank filled when  motors is on. Alarm  in the tank can indicate when tank would fill and prevent water from running up from the tank.

 Using aerator

Aerator is a device that is attached to the faucet of the tap. It works by mixing air with water creating a steady flow of water. It reduces the rate of flow of water without any compromise on performance. It is easy to install and affordable.

Raise awareness

This is the most important step toward conserving water. Tell the people of your surrounding about the water's scarcity and how to save water in daily life. Make them aware of the problem along with its solution. Inspire them to take action by changing yourself first.

Conclusion

Water is  our basic need, which is available to us by nature, we often disvalue water by its  easy availability. Now people have to dig more soil to reach to the water level. It will be continued if we don't take things seriously and change ourselves. Practicing these simple ways to save water in daily life can save a lot of water in long term. We use water mindfully; it's important to save water. This context bends without knowing the value of water that we have.
