The 4R's refuse ,reduce, reuse ,recycle and then what explained?

 Refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle

The four Rs principle of refusing, reducing, reusing, and recycling tells us to minimize the generation of waste. Excessive waste is the main problem of today . Landfills are flooded with waste generated by us .waste scattered on roadside is common to see in most of the cities now. Refuse, reduce, reuse, and recycle tell us to refuse unnecessary items, reduce our consumption, reuse things, and recycle as much as possible. By saying yes to refusing, reducing, reusing, and recycling, we can have a positive impact on the environment. R's follow a specific order; each of them is explained sequentially below.

Refuse

Refuse means to say no to unnecessary items in our life. It minimizes the need of one in our daily life. We mostly buy things in the urge which we really don't need. This increase the waste production on a daily basis. Being mindful of what we really need and what we don't need helps us to determine that there are so many extra stuffs in life that we can refuse. Refusal to single-use plastic and products with too much packaging would be a big step to sustainability. When we refuse to buy uneco-friendly option in the market that only will brand come with eco-friendly options.

Reduce

Reduce means to minimize the consumption that would directly reduce the production of waste. You should also reduce on waste generated; for instance, paper waste, food waste, grocery waste, cloth waste, etc.

Reuse

Being creative with your old product can help to give old things a new life. Also, a new life can bring to products by donating them to those who really need them.

 Recycle

Recycling is the last step of the 4 R's. It offers a chance to divert waste from going to landfills. It is the process of using products again in a different way, like a new product. Recycling often proves very difficult for most products, and it also requires other materials. Even sometimes, it takes a lot of time. It should be considered at the last. One should focus more on refusal, reducing, and reusing before recycling, as after a certain recycling period, products need to be disposed off.

How to refuse, reduce, reuse, and recycle

Tips to refuse

  • refuse single-use plastic such as straws, polythene bags, bottles, etc.
  • Choose eco-friendly options, choose products with minimal packaging and support eco-friendly brands that come with no packaging.
  • Say no to items you don't need, define your needs and buy things as per need, and cut down on extra stuff.
  • Think about what is actually needed, cut down on things that you don't need.

Tips to reduce

  • Reduce paper usage, minimize the wastage of paper on a daily basis.
  • Reduce the production of waste generated at your home by maintaining your waste and segregating it into different piles.
  • Reduce the wastage of food by proper planning.

Tips to reuse

  • Reuse all your old stuff, be creative with your old stuff and use them. For instance, you can use old newspapers, bags, clothes, etc.
  •  Donate your old stuff to those who really need them. There are many stores where you can exchange your old items for new ones.
  •  Be companian with your things; people discard things before their lifespan as everyone likes to consume of new things, we should know the lifespan of things and use them to their potential. We can repair things to make them as good as new.
  • Reuse old cloth as mop or as a duster.

Tips to recycle

Make new things from the things that are not capable of now using. We can make pen holders, plant pots, home decor using bottles, and compost bin from old buckets. But you should remember that recycling is not the ideal solution, so refuse, reduce, and reuse before recycling.

Some common ways to recycle:

  • use newspaper as a wrapper
  • make bags from old clothes
  • use plastic bottles and jars to build eco-bricks
  • recycle your electronic devices such as batteries, mobiles, etc.
  • Composting is the method of breaking down food waste into soil that enriched the soil with nutrients. Composting can be done directly by putting out a pit in soil and putting food waste in it then covering it with soil. Composting can be done at home using compost bin.

 What after recycling?

After recycling, the process of refusing, reducing, reusing, and recycling, it's time to decide what will happen next. We have two types of products: biodegradable and non-biodegradable. Biodegradable products are able to decompose themselves naturally, such as paper and organic waste. But non-biodegradable products don't decompose and pollute the environment. We can't even recycle them after a certain period of time. Even if they mix with biodegradable waste, they lose their ability to decompose. It's important to segregate properly into biodegradable and non-biodegradable. Plastic, glass, and metal are recycled in factories to produce new products. Manufacturers recycle these and also give amounts for this. Waste management organizations is one organisation that collects waste for recycling.

Concluding, for sustainability and a better future that lives on low waste. The concept of refusing, reducing, reusing, and recycling is important. One should learn it and adopt it in their life. This one cannot be learned in a day; it would take months and years. It is necessary that we try and bring a change daily to change the future one-day. Composting is the method of breaking down food waste into soil and enriching its nutrients. One method of directly composting is putting the waste into a compost pile and then covered with soil. Waste will decompose naturally. You can also go for composting in compost bin at your home.
